Cloth, slate, and what to ignore when you buy
Worsted vs woolen, one-piece slate, and the marketing words that do not survive a Saturday.
Bar owners get sold the same three words: tournament, pro, and regulation. Two of them are loose. Here is what actually changes how the table lives in your room.
Slate. On a commercial 7-foot you want a real slate bed, ideally one piece. Three-piece is what you see on bigger tables that have to go up stairs. One-piece on a bar box is simpler and stays flatter if it is supported and bolted correctly. Thickness around an inch on a Valley-class table is the expected spec. Foam “slate” is not a bar table.
Cloth. Worsted (Simonis-style, Championship, Valley Ultra) plays faster and sheds spills better than a fuzzy woolen. Woolen is cheaper and grabs the ball. In a bar, worsted wins unless you are putting a table in a garage and know it. Color is a brand choice: tournament green hides chalk; blue photographs; burgundy looks like a supper club. Recoth when the nap is gone and the spots are glazed, not when Instagram is bored.
Cushions. Dead rails are how a “fine table” becomes a complaint box. Dual-density, bolted correctly, replaced when the bounce is tired. If a quote on a used table does not mention cushions, ask.
Pockets. Bar boxes play a little generous compared to a Diamond in a hall. League players still want them consistent. Flush liners that can be replaced beat rotting leather you cannot service at 1 a.m.
The pay system. Coin mech, bill acceptor, card. This is the part that fails in a bar, not the slate. Buy the system you will actually empty and not hate. Batteries, firmware, and a jammed $1 bill are operator problems — we came up in that world, which is why operator-grade quotes include “does the door work.”
Ignore: most wood species names, “casino grade” on a home table, and any 8-foot two-piece slate being pitched as a drop-in for a tavern league. Look at footprint, return, cloth, rails, and whether the coin door has been opened by someone who knew what they were doing.
